Low Carb Ham & Cheese Lettuce Wraps
Do you want a healthier alternative to a traditional sandwich.
Try this low carb ham & cheese lettuce wrap. It’s also lower in calories and won’t break your calorie budget. It’s great for a larger snack or pair it with greek yogurt and some fruit for a filling lunch.
You’ll need some large lettuce leaves that are pliable. A good option is
either iceberg or Boston lettuce. Overlap a couple of lettuce leaves together. Substituted lettuce for your bread lowers the calories and carbs significantly. Lettuce is only ~ 2 calories per outer leaf.
Layer approximately 1 oz or 3 slices of a lean, low sodium ham in each leaf bed. Look for a brand that has the American Heart Association Heart Check on the packaging. The brand I chose had was only 10 calories per slice and was 98% fat free. Five slices of this brand contained 9 grams of protein, 1 gram of fat and 390 mg of sodium.
You can now layer extra vegetables on top of your ham. Vegetable are a great source of fiber and vitamins. I used some cucumbers but you can add pepper strips, red onion, tomatoes etc.
Be creative 🙂
Ok I admit it…. I love cheese… any cheese. Yes, I realize that cheese can be higher in saturated fat so you have to be careful on how much you eat. There are some good lower fat options in the grocery store. Look for those that are 2% milk fat instead of whole milk (4%). If you like the even lower fat option, then go for it. Personally, I find it kind of gets rubbery when it gets too low in fat. I’d rather skip it all together or eat the 2% variety in smaller amounts. Always practice moderation on those foods that may sabotage your weight. I used a half a slice of low fat gouda per wrap. One slice contains 60 calories, 4.5 grams of fat and 3 grams of saturated fat. Tip: If you are not a cheese lover, you can substitute with a couple of slices of avocado.
Once I have all my filling in, I like to drizzle some balsamic vinegar on it. Slowly roll the lettuce leaves around the filling to hold everything in place. I got a little artsy and placed tomato slices on the outside but I also planned to use a knife and fork to eat it instead of picking it up like any traditional wrap. 😉

- 4 iceberg lettuce leaves
- 2 oz – 98% fat free ham
- 1/2 cup cucumber slices
- 2 slices of tomatoes
- 1 slice low fat gouda cheese
- 1 tsp balsamic vinegar
- Take 4 large outer lettuce leaves. Wash and pat dry. Overlap/layer a couple of lettuce leaves forming a nice bed for your wrap filling. Add 3 slices of a low fat deli meat such as lean Black Forest ham. Add cucumber slices, tomato slices and/or any other type of vegetable that you can easily wrap. Place a 1/2 slice of your choice of lower fat cheese in each wrap. Drizzle filling with a little balsamic vinegar. Carefully roll lettuce leaves around the filling. I recommend two lettuce wraps per person. Enjoy!
