Chili Lime Yogurt ‘Butter’

Flavored butter is all the rage these days – honey butter, orange butter, lemon herb butter, dill butter, to name a few.  As a foodie, I’m all over it – I mean seriously … yum. But butter packs a whopping 100 calories per tablespoon and 11 grams of saturated fat – cue the sad music.

After trying one of these flavored butters, my first thought was ‘this does taste amazing’ … yes, let’s be honest 😉 … but as always my second thought was how can I make this healthier while still duplicating the flavor.

Fat is not viewed as the big evil it was a decade ago, but it is still important to heed the American Heart Association’s recommended fat guidelines.

  • 25 -35% of daily calories from fat
  • Minimize saturated fat intake to less than 7% of daily calories

So I made over a flavored butter recipe to a healthier version that can be enjoyed without guilt! See the recipe below for the details.

I experimented with a chili lime flavor and used it to baste salmon steaks.  It had a hint of tangy lime flavor with a touch of spiciness which worked well with the salmon.  It would also be great with chicken or to use as a dipping sauce. Get creative with your seasoning!

Chili Lime Yogurt ‘Butter’

A healthy take on flavored butter. Use low-fat plain Greek yogurt instead. This recipe has a tangy lime flavor with a touch of spiciness.
Ingredients
  • 4 Tablespoons Plain low-fat Greek yogurt
  • 2 tsp lime juice
  • 1 tsp lime zest
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt, coarse
Instructions
  1. Mix all ingredients together. Use to baste fish or chicken or use it as a fresh dip for raw vegetables.
